Kinky Boots review

*This was a gifted experience

Sass, laughter, joy, and a great story. This is exactly what Kinky Boots has, and before I even start on the review I’m going to say it’s a show you need to get down to the theatre and watch.

As Lola would say: ladies, gentleman, and those who haven’t made their mind up yet… you are in for one hell of a ride.

KInky Boots review

Kinky Boots is a theatre performance that follows the story of Charlie Price who actually wanted to leave his home town, but after a series of unexpected events he ends up inheriting his dad’s shoe shop and factory – Price & Sons.

After inheriting, it starts with Charlie being overwhelmed trying to find the easy way out but ends up with a super determined Charlie who completely transforms the business into a success, with a bit of help along the way by cross-dresser sass queen Lola and her tribe.

Together they work with the Price & Sons team to launch their new product – robust stilettos, but along the way, they also have to deal with judgement from the team, before gaining acceptance.

Kinky Boots review

I honestly wasn’t sure what to expect when I was kindly gifted tickets to watch Kinky Boots. I had only heard great things and I have to say this performance went well beyond my expectations.

Kayi Ushe who played Lola was absolutely sensational and definitely stole the show. He managed to play a character being ferociously strong, but also incredibly vulnerable too. His costumes and sassiness as he walked along the stage ensured you never took your eyes off of him too.

Working seamlessly together with Kayi was Joel Harper-Jackson who played Charlie Price. His character portrayed someone who was liked by everyone, but his character also presented the fear you may find yourself in if suddenly handed the same amount of responsibility.

Kinky Boots review

The choreography of Kinky Boots was another thing that really stood out, the fast-paced routines, many of which were in incredibly high heels, were impressive. In particular, the scene with choreography on the treadmills was my favourite. It was nothing like I’ve seen before, super clever and simply amazing.

The songs were well performed, but I don’t think it’s something you’ll spend the next few weeks singing constantly, but this isn’t a negative. This doesn’t detract from the storyline and perhaps enhances it as this is what Kinky Boots is about to me – the story.

Ultimately Kinky Boots is a story all about acceptance, love, determination and success. Ending with a standing ovation showed just how good the show was. It runs in Southampton until the 14th September so hurry up and get yourselves a ticket.
